Using the Tools at Hand

ds

In marketing, as well as in just about everything else, you have to use the tools that are available to you, not the ones that you wish were available to you. There’s an old joke, told in many different ways, about people who are hungry and isolated in some way, but they have a can of food.

“How do we open it,” one of them says some version of. The other says something like: “OK, imagine a can opener…” and then goes on with the rest of their plans for the meal.

The joke is that none of the things that they’re listing off are possible because they’re just imagining the can opener. They aren’t actually focused on the problem at hand, rather, they’re focused on what they want to do. It’s important to not let that happen to your marketing.

Responsive Marketing

Before you go into all of the things you want to do, it’s important to do the work that will allow you to get there. Setting up a foundation that works for your business, that can be built upon, is always important. It might be more important now.

That said, another important reason to have that foundation is that it can make it all that much easier for you to “pivot.” That way, you can change your marketing approach quickly, all while staying true to your core principles, customers, and more.
