“There’s something not great about our online marketing, but I don’t know what it is. We’re working really hard, but nothing’s really taking off.”
This is a common concern for marketers. It feels like you’re working hard and doing everything right, but it’s all not coming together.
One thing that sometimes Danny Star has to remind the team is: “go back to fundamentals.”
That may sound overly simplistic, but it’s very good advice.
It’s especially good advice if you’re “in the weeds” on one particular campaign or another. By doing that, every now and then, you give yourself and your marketing that much better opportunity for success.
Start at the Beginning
If you’ve ever looked up “digital marketing” (as we do every day for the news) you’ll inevitably find plenty of articles where someone just lays out the fundamentals.
Should it have been some time since you acquainted yourself with the fundamentals, articles like this can help.
But, you don’t really even need those.
Often, we find ourselves in the midst of a heated campaign, trying to figure out how to make something absolutely perfect. That’s an important, worthy goal.
However, in the midst of all that, it can be clarifying and profoundly beneficial to ask ourselves: “why?” Why are we doing this? What exactly are we attempting to accomplish with this?
After all, that’s where marketing, on and offline, really starts. By looking at something and determining whether or not we’re really providing value, if it has something other than just telling someone to buy something, by going back to those fundamentals, we keep our marketing from ever being stagnant. Or, worse, disconnected from what we want to accomplish.
